Every week, a group of robots would
get together to play a game of poker. It was always a
friendly game and many times, it was not even real money
that was used at the poker table. Every once in awhile,
however, they decided to break with tradition and to
allow things of monetary value to be used in order to
place the bets. It was decided that the next week, the
poker chips would be worth money and they would have to
set some limitations on exactly how much a person could
lose. Mr. Roboto listened with a small smile on his
robotic face.
Whenever it came time for the next game to be played,
Mr. Roboto thought that it would be a good idea if he
wore long sleeves to the game. He didn't do this because
it was typically cold in the house where they played
cards, he did it because he wanted to hide cards up his
sleeve and use them to cheat his friends out of their
hard-earned money. He had everything set up properly,
including a self-destruct sequence which would instantly
reduce the cards to ash if they were discovered. It was
a foolproof plan, but it didn't go off without a hitch.
First of all, he had a difficult time convincing the
other players that he was chilly. After all, they kept
the house at well over 100°, a temperature that easily
allowed the robots free movement and for their hydraulic
fluid to flow nicely in their joints. After a little
convincing, however, it was finally XR419 that suggested
that the game go on.
Captain Squeaky was the first one to deal and he dealt a
hand of five card stud, one of his favorite games to
play. Of course, he had to make a comment about the fact
that he was the robotic stud at the table and although
couple of them snickered politely, it was really a
rather old joke. Mr. Roboto was a little careful not to
win too many hands out of the starting gate but he
easily took this game and then proceeded to lose a few
in order to throw the other players off of his trail.
The real problem occurred when he decided that it
was time to go for the gusto and he was going to pull
out three aces and bid the maximum bid in order to take
away as much loot from the table as he possibly could.
Every player stayed in the game, some of them grumbling
about the fact that the stakes were getting so high.
When it came time to lay down their cards, an amazing
thing happened. Every single player laid down three aces
which sparked an immediate volley of laser beams,
leaving several players blackened and all of the poker
chips melted into the table. Fortunately, this also
leveled the playing field and nobody knew who had won
what. They decided to put it all behind them, banned the
use of long sleeve shirts at the poker table and
prepared to clean up for the next week's game. |
