It is pretty much a given that every
once in a while there will be a new person or two that
will join in your regular home game. On one particular
night, Tommy had told us about two fishes that he had
played in a poker game with on campus. He kept telling
us how horrible they were, that they were dead money and
had lots of it. Figuring we could use the extra cash we
decided to open up the game to them.
Nothing was really out of sorts
except one of them seemed to have a nasty cold, coughing
and blowing his nose every few minutes or so. I decided
to have him sit as far away from me as possible, as I
absolutely hate getting sick. The game went on as
usual, with people feeling each other out. Trying to
figure out the new guys was extremely hard though. I
just went off of what Tommy had said and pegged them for
really loose horrible players, with a nice fat
bankroll.
Well after a few hours or so, I
noticed that one of them had built a nice chip stack.
Lucky I had guessed. I had a bad run of cards and
seemed to be folding almost every single hand, when I
decided to watch the new poker chip leader. I thought
to myself - I hope I don’t get any of his chips cause
he’s been blowing snot all night on them. Then a funny
thing hit me, I noticed he seemed to blow his nose or
cough when his buddy was up. After another hour, I
finally put it together. Whenever he would blow his
nose his buddy would fold, when he would cough he would
raise. I tapped Joe on the leg and nodded to the door.
“I need a smoke,” I told everyone.
“I need some air,” said Joe. After telling Joe what I
had seen we had concluded that these two had set Tommy
up and figured they would get into our poker game and
run the table on us. Not tonight though. You see Joe
is the starting tight end on the football team.
Standing just a shade over 6’5” and nearly 280 lbs. he
looks like someone you would not want to meet in a dark
alley.
Before I could even finish my next
sentence Joe had run in and had one of the guys up
against the wall by the throat and told him “First you
and your pal are going to empty your pockets and leave
real nice like. Then if I ever see you around you will
walk the other way.” Cowering in the corner of the room
was his friend, no one really knew what was going on and
we figured we did not want any trouble so we decided to
tell the rest of the crew after they left. Tommy is a
good guy, so we believed him when he said he had no
idea. That night we made another rule for the crew –
Tommy is no longer allowed to bring anyone into our
poker games.
