The Poker Joker
The University I attended had a student body of over
40,000. It was a normal thing to meet new people, all the time. On a
boring Friday night with no parties and nothing else better to do I
rounded up the troops for a poker game. All were accounted for except for
Ben. Ben is the guy you hated in High School – tall, good looking,
athletic and always got the girl. It came as no shock when Tommy walked
in and said that Ben was out with some girl, but was going to make up
some excuse so he could come over and play cards.
After a few beers and seeing how everyone was doing,
Ben finally showed up and the game got under way. After a few hands, as
usual, Ben started to tell us about this blonde number he had met at the
library earlier that day and had subsequently been out with that night.
Also as usual, he had to describe her faults – her weird laugh, the way
she had her hair done, her car.
Jimmy was the joker of the crew, always laughing or
making jokes. While Ben talked, he sat silent with a frown on his face. I
was sitting directly across from Jimmy and asked if he was alright.
Brushing me off, he asked Ben what her name was and where they went. Ben
replied “Her name’s Lacey and we went to Chili’s, why?”
After screaming that he was going to strangle him and
poker chips flying across the room, I did my best to wrestle Jimmy to the
ground. Now, I am no genius, but I had finally put the earlier frown,
questions and screaming together. Jimmy had just started dating some girl
named Lacey and was head over heels for her. He was telling us all about
her and earlier said it was a good thing we had a game going because she
was at Chili’s with some of her friends and he had nothing else to do.
After settling it like men, (we decided to let them
duke it out in my front yard for a few minutes), Ben agreed to move on to
another girl he had his eye on. After dumping her, Jimmy needed some
revenge and called her roommate pretending to be the free clinic. His
message: Please call us immediately, we have your STD test results and
they are not good. Never mess with the Joker.
